The lies we weave
Hang from the ceilings
Of the rooms
We dreamed up once
Upon a time
In nighttimes held in
Hands so large and warm
We never had to breathe,
They hold us there
Afraid to move or break
The cord that winds its
Silken thread
About our limbs
Until the will to step from corners
Dies and lies in silence
A shell bereft of care,
And still we spin
Draw in those who fly
Too close or
Cannot feel the risk
We show so plain
To believe the lies we say
As if they were anything but
The web we sleep within.

Beautifully melancholic, “A shell bereft of care” is as powerful a statement as you could make but then the opening lines draw you in to that powerful sense of regret and helplessness you express so well

Thanks, Peter, for a lovely response which gets right to the point of this. I am delighted that you felt that this was effective.

Very profoundly, you had, describe how we are all, made up of, the lies we tell ourselves…

You got it. Thanks for reading.

A powerful and melancholy piece Chris. Very unnerving.

Thanks, Rachel – that’s sort of what I was aiming for!

Speaks of the lies we all carry with us and that are a part of who we are. A wonderful poem Chris.
chrisnelson61 said:
Thanks, Mark. And yes, they do indeed become a part of who we are.

This is deep and heavily felt. For a person to make their lies their own reality to the point where others are unwittingly drawn in and entangled in this false reality. Wrapped in a cocoon of delusion.
chrisnelson61 said:
And also the lies that are born into us that are difficult to see or escape until it is too late. Thank you, Tara.
tara caribou said:
Can you explain a little more what you mean by that: born into us?
chrisnelson61 said:
I think that there are certain ‘lies’ (‘there is a greater meaning to life’, ‘good things come to those who wait’, ‘karma’, ‘the reward reflects the effort’…) that, for, all good intentions, are fed to us from a very early age (who knows, perhaps they are within the amniotic fluid – after all the foetus is influenced by music), and then, unbeknownst to us, become part of us. Perhaps the lies that we tell ourselves merely build on these until, as the cliche goes, we can’t see the wood for the trees.
Just thoughts really. Hope you get my drift.

Yes, that made perfect sense. And I agree. Deep thoughts, Chris. I thank you for THAT too.

This is wonderful Chris. From that intriguing title to the raw, bare truth that lies in the poem lines, each word is so stark, melancholic yet very very beautiful. I love the honest in those lines and I have to get back to the poem once again, it is just so good. Some might call it sombre or even sadistic, but you have done a wonderful job framing the poem. I don’t know about the optimists but I absolutely love this poem. I’m stoked.
