I wore my smile
Across the years,
It masked the pain
And hid the tears,
It locked the door
And hid the key,
So no-one close,
Would ever see.
I wore my smile
Across the years,
A heavy veil
For silent fears,
To fool the crowd
Within my sway,
And help to hold
The dogs at bay.
I wore my smile
Across the years,
To fend away
The swords and spears,
But now I find
I cannot choose,
To drop the smile
And to be true.
We all, learned to, hide our own, negative, emotions, because we are socialized, into, knowing that they’re, not, accepted by the, outside world, and, doing it, long-term, has a, very, adverse, impact on our, psychological, wellbeing.
Absolutely nailed it! Glad this came across and that you enjoyed it. Thanks for your thoughts.
Brilliant, Chris.
Thanks, Bruce, I’m delighted you liked this.
the most stalwart of facades can only hold for so long. Excellent poem Chris.
So very true, Mark. Glad you enjoyed reading this, and thanks for such a great comment. Much appreciated.
And this is why it’s important to see the smile but to pay attention to the eyes. Pain may be hidden away in the depths but will seen by those willing to truly look.
And it is wonderful to have somebody who can really read a poem casting their eyes over what I write. Thank you, Tara, for such an insightful, apt and understanding response.
Best choice ever.
Thank you.
