A song from Scotland’s finest: ‘It Never Was the Same’ by The Twilight Sad.
Whiskey rough against my throat
A coarse glass-paper graze
On bare unshielded knees
Warms kisses deep within me
A comfort hug from someone dear
Wraps its arms around my soul
And takes away the pain
A slug to loosen up the tongue
One to ease the fear
A slug to bring connection
And one to make me sane
And when the tide comes over me
The cleansing bath of nauseous waves
I’ll hide again behind my tears
And wait for better days.
This is the final poem influenced by some of the songs by The Twilight Sad.
Last night the distance burned
As I watched Charlotte dance
Her swirling grace and wonder
In half-lit rooms of night.
A tidal wave of words
Swelled stirred within my head
Fell, drowned silent, from my mouth
Beneath another’s voice.
But in my head we danced
To music from my heart
And words I’d never spoken
We held each other tight.
And now the music dies
Cold lights reclaim their life
And I am left with nothings
But dreams that might have been.
